The Visually Impaired to Fight for their Rights on White Cane Day

It’s been twenty years since the visually impaired in Mongolia have been celebrating the “White Cane” day, on every October 15 th, singing, dancing, and organizing fun contests. But last year, on October 15 th, the Mongolian Association of the Blind, and the Provisional Committee organizing the Struggle for protection of human rights of the Blind decided to use the day to fight for their rights. They adopted a petition containing eight issues and requested the Government to take appropriate measures resolving them and declared a hunger strike. The government accepted their request and set up a joint working group.

“This year, during the White Cane Day, we’re going to measure our success, and plan for the next step in fighting for our rights,” said Bayasgalan M., the manager of the Provisional Committee. “Although we’ve achieved a lot, we still aren’t satisfied.”

Liberty Center wishes them luck.
